Rib Fixation Plates

Overview

Range overview

Two designs make up this range of rib fixation plates, and they approach the same problem from opposite directions. The Rib Claw Plate wraps tapered extensions around the upper and lower rib margins; the Rib Locking Fixation Plate System runs a continuous line of locking holes along the outer rib surface instead. Both take their longitudinal curve from the rib's changing contour rather than sitting as a flat strip across it.

Rib claw plates for the rib margins

Machined from pure titanium by Kangli Orthopaedics, the claw plate keeps a low-profile body with a widened perforated centre, oval and circular openings in staggered rows, and tapered extensions at either end shaped to pass around the rib edges. Fourteen configurations cover three diameters of 11, 15 and 19 mm and three lengths of 34, 49 and 59 mm, in clean or sterile packaging.

Rib locking plates on the outer rib surface

In the locking system, plate and screw threads engage each other at the hole, so a screw is fixed at its angle in the plate rather than pulling the plate down onto bone. Plate, screws and rib segment then behave as one locked frame rather than a plate held by friction. Longer curved bodies and shorter rounded-end options follow different chest wall contours, and each plate seats against the outer rib surface as it is.

Instrumentation for thin cortical bone

The system is used with a depth-limiting drill whose collar halts the bit once the set depth is reached, so depth behind a thin rib cortex is set by the instrument rather than judged mid-pass. Locking points carry recessed cross-drive interfaces that stay within the plate profile along the curve.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the claw plate and the locking system?

Geometry, and where the plate takes hold. The claw plate grips through tapered extensions that wrap around the upper and lower rib edges, adding fixation surfaces at the margins. The locking system takes hold entirely through a central row of locking holes on the outer rib surface, with no rib-edge extensions. The two are chosen against the construct being planned.

Are the rib plates available sterile?

The Rib Claw Plate is catalogued in two packaging forms, clean packaging and sterile packaging, across its fourteen configurations. Which form is supplied is selected when the order is specified. The Rib Locking Fixation Plate System carries no packaging form in the current listing, so confirm it with the catalogue rather than reading it across from the claw plate.

What sizes does the rib claw plate come in?

Fourteen configurations, spanning three diameters of 11, 15 and 19 mm and three lengths of 34, 49 and 59 mm, in pure titanium. The widened centre carries staggered rows of oval and circular openings, while the narrowed ends retain the contoured outline that lets the extensions pass around the rib edges.

Does the locking system need periosteal stripping?

No. Each plate seats against the outer rib surface as it is, because the curve is already drawn to the line of the rib rather than formed as a straight strip that has to be bedded in. Stripping the periosteum back to make room for the implant is not a preparation step the construct calls for.

What instrument sets the drilling depth?

A depth-limiting drill supplied with the locking system. Its collar stops the bit advancing once the set depth is reached, so the limit behind a thin rib cortex is mechanical rather than a matter of feel. The locking points themselves use recessed cross-drive interfaces, which keeps the driver connection inside the plate profile along the curved surface.

Can rib plates be manufactured under our own label?

Yes. Kangli Orthopaedics is a manufacturer offering OEM, ODM and OBM arrangements for orthopaedic implants and instruments, founded in 2002 and running about 200 staff on a campus of roughly 40,000 square metres. The company sells directly into 35 countries and its devices reach more than 40. Use the Request a Quote form to begin.
